Kalamkari is not simply a print placed onto fabric. It is a process slow, intricate, and deeply dependent on the skill of the artisans who bring it to life.

The Rhythm of the Block

In the villages where our Kalamkari is created, artisans work by hand, one impression at a time.

A single fabric may be block-printed multiple times, with each stage adding another colour, detail, or layer to the design. The block must be carefully aligned with what came before it. Again and again, the artisan repeats the process across metres of fabric. What appears effortless in the finished piece is, in reality, the result of repetition, precision,

patience, and years of practised hands.

A slight variation is not a flaw.

It is the quiet evidence that a human hand was there.

When the Kalam Becomes the Brush

Then there is Pen Kalamkari, an even more intimate form of the craft. Here, the artwork is created by hand using the kalam, a traditional pen-like tool. Instead of relying

on conventional synthetic colours, traditional processes draw their palette from natural sources,

including plants and other naturally derived materials.

For our work on Bangalore silk, the preparation of the fabric is as important as the painting itself.

Traditional treatments, including milk-based processes, help prepare the surface and control the movement of colour so that the artwork can take form without simply spreading across the fabric.

Only then does the artist begin.

Line by line.

Colour by colour.

By hand.
The process cannot be rushed. The fabric demands patience, the colours demand knowledge, and the art demands respect.
